I thought it would be interesting to research into the connotations of each colour lipstick. I found it interesting that colours communicate conscious and unconscious messages and the impact of colour can have a profound affect on peoples judgements and assumptions.
Red- Bright red glossy lipstick sends a strong sexual message, although the cultural significance of red lipstick has varied over the centuries according to societal norms. Red is associated with sexuality, drama, excitement, sophistication and charisma. Its and extremely bold colour, and to wear it, gives of the aura of being confident and comfortable in your own skin.
PINK- Light pink is sometimes called 'the innocent version of red' as it is a combinations
of red and white. Pink is associated with love, kindness, sweetness, romance, compassion, affection and so on and so forth (you get the idea). Although 'hot pink' is associated with similar sensual connotations as red due to its vibrancy.
PEACH/ORANGE- Peach toned lipsticks have some of the femininity that shades of pink have, although are seen as less girly. It communicates a sense of down-to-earth like attitude and steers away from the overt feminine messages pink conveys.Bright orange symbolises, vitality, joyfulness and positivity.
Purple/Burgundy- Burgundy lipsticks are convey a sense of magic, depth, and dignity and often has regal connotations. It is a colour that can look great on darker skin, and shows a sense of empowerment and pride. Purple also has connotations of royalty, richness, social power and elitism. Again, like red, it is a colour to wear with confidence.
BLACK- Black can be seen as an intimidating colour to wear. To wear black is a powerful statement, as it shows the wearer is comfortable in their skin and their surroundings. It has associations with avant-garde, and the Gothic subculture.
BROWN/NUDE- Brown and nude lipsticks connote nature, and being earthy. These shades communicate, steadiness, and stability. With the right shade, these tones can look lovely, but usually better with gloss, as they can look cakey as a matte colour.
